My story

Hello all!

My name is Abi Starr and I'm from the South West of England.

I'm an absolute wildlife nut with a particular interest in birds, cetaceans and bats.

Back when I was 12, in 2009, I was diagnosed with ME, also called Chronic Fatigue syndrome. I hate that name, it implies sufferers are 'Just Tired', but it is so much more.

Currently my main symptoms are fatigue, insomnia, digestive issues, 'brain fog' and pain (this pain is different and very rarely eased by painkillers). Since then I've also been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Supraventricular Tachycardia.

It's had such an enormous impact on my life. I had to reduce my attendance at school. But this didn't help, so eventually I had to quit entirely. I ended up studying my core GCSEs online in a virtual learning environment.

After this, I just about managed to make it back to 'real life' school for my A levels. Although I only attempted three, and it took me three years. But I did it.

More recently I completed a BSc in Biology (Conservation Biology) at Bath Spa University and somehow came out with an upper 2:1. I really enjoyed learning about practical outdoor survey techniques and conservation, but as my classmates planned for a career in Ecology, it became blindly obvious that at the moment, this is beyond my reach. I had to rethink.

So here I am, it's early October 2019, and I'm just beginning my MA in Travel and Nature Writing. Something that should be within my grasp as, on my worst days, I can write in bed should I need to.

I'm hoping this blog will help me develop my writing as well as share my love of nature and how I adjust my adventures to make it easier for me. I hope you enjoy it.
